AmeriCorps Off-Campus team members are serving in New Castle and some surrounding communities. Their goal is to leverage social capital within the community and across agencies where members are placed for the specific purpose of enhancing quality of life for children and their families.
The off-campus AmeriCorps members kicked off a new term at the beginning of October 2006. Most members are located at schools and agencies throughout New Castle, although a few are placed at sites slightly beyond the city’s parameters. Despite member’s site locations, all of them are busy serving kids, seniors and everyone in between; making sure the needs of the community are met one day at a time. Some of the sites that AmeriCorps members are serving at include the following: Lawrence County Community Action Partnership, Braddock's Field Historical Society, New Castle Community YMCA, Department of Public Safety – VOAD, and Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County.
Many members located at the Slippery Rock I CARE House have been actively involved in securing donations and flushing out the details for the playground build that took place October 28th, 2006. Others at the House have been involved in Community Development by way of helping the Courtside neighborhood, home of the I CARE House, to form a Neighborhood Association. They are meeting on the second Tuesday each month at 6:30-8:00 pm at the I CARE House. Additional members placed at the House have been participating in senior citizen program and helping the neighborhood children stay on top of their school work.
Many other members have been active in local schools. They are involved in helping children learn to be more effective readers and have been participating in after school tutoring programs. Chris Stoy, located at Farrell School District, has been active in the district’s C.O.O.L. (Children’s Opportunities for Outside Learning) Program. Chris said, “We take the students on field trips, conduct educational programs, provide extensive tutoring, and an assortment of other activities." There are currently AmeriCorps members serving at Wilmington Area School District, Lockley Primary Center, Thaddeus Stevens Primary Center, JFK Primary Center, West Side Elementary School, George Washington Intermediate School, New Castle Junior High School, Lawrence County Career & Technical Center, Braddock Library, New Castle High School, and Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center. Recently, a new program, Athlete to Athlete, has been implemented in New Castle School district to help athletes succeed in the classroom as well as on the field. Adult mentors will be involved with tutoring these athletes in the near future.
